It all stemmed form a aggressive marketing campaign by accounting software company Xero. Bookkeepers felt that accounting software vendors such as Xero failed to advise business owners of the risks of DIY accounting and were trying to make the role of the bookkeeper redundant.

Xero responded by stating that “We also don’t think the end is nigh for bookkeepers – quite the opposite…I’m sorry if we got our wires crossed somewhere. But we’re all in on bookies” and the company has committed to providing more resources for bookkeepers.
